The back doesn't taper, but the cups are good.
The end was larger and flatter than expected. I've used these to attach the glass to a number of coffee tables and the old ones had a tapered nipple that slides better into the hole. I had to use some dish soap and a small screwdriver/pick to get the end of the mushroom into the metal hole. If you twist the suction cup a little, you can put them down completely. Once this was done the suction cups really stuck to the glass. They're a little larger than necessary, but now you can bang the table and the glass will stay in place.
