Not as fun as I was hoping

When I first met my husband and started visiting his parents' house, our family had a favorite outdoor game called Lawns. Some of you may remember those huge, deadly-looking metal arrows that are about the length of your forearm. The object of the game was to throw these big darts across the yard onto the rings lying in the grass. I've always been a bit scared of these things as I was sure that if I accidentally throw one of them over the neighbor's fence I could easily kill their dog. The family told me they have been enjoying this game for decades and have used up a few sets but this will be the last as they are no longer sold. When our children were born, the grandparents hid the jars as a precaution, afraid to let their grandchildren play with them. So when I saw this set of soft tip yard darts I thought they might be the perfect way to introduce this game to my kids safely. Only 4 darts and a pair of plastic rings are included. When my kids took them to play, they could only show interest in them for about 15 minutes. Darts are clumsy things that fly through the air like fat ducks. They're so weighted that they should always land tip-up, but we've found that while they'll rock on weighted ground, they're just as likely to tip over on their sides on uneven ground. Basically my kids got bored with this game and when I entered the house I came back a few minutes later to find that they had quit darts and started playing basketball. They never got to play (or even see!) the spooky garden pots hidden in their grandparents' garage, so I know they didn't compare the two games (although I did). Maybe it's because there are only two of them. Darts for every person or team, or maybe it's because the game lacks the subtle sense of potential danger that the Jarts had, but still I can't recommend a game that my kids got bored of so easily. Younger kids (elementary level or younger) may enjoy the game, but I think it will take more than one set to progress the game faster.
