I bought this for my elderly father because he drinks coffee very slowly and then has to heat it up in the microwave (and almost always forgets the coffee is in the microwave). It uses a large mug instead of a standard mug, so I needed a flat heating pad to accommodate the larger base (and prevent tipping over). Because my dad has Alzheimer's, I wanted a heating pad that he couldn't turn on and then forget. It also had to be very simple, without a lot of settings or buttons, as it's difficult for him to learn how to use new elements. This one only turns on when there's something on it, so it worked well either way. In addition to keeping my dad's coffee warm, I've also found it helpful for keeping his soup warm and for keeping food plates warm whenever he needs to take his pills before meals (a tedious process because he takes them sooooo slowly and reluctantly ). My father's move to a nursing home, the warmer it is now for my elderly mother. She loves it! It keeps hot drinks hot while she sips them slowly, it's easy for her to use and easy to wipe clean if necessary (after it's cooled first, of course). She has found that this works best with medium/short cups as tall, narrow cups heat up unevenly.
