Review on Schwinn Koen Boys SmartStart Wheels by Jim Booth

Revainrating 4 out of 5

18 " Great bike for my 5 year old!

We've been in the trenches with the first two kids and bought used and cheap bikes. But for the third kid it's just the best ! ; ) He started out on the Strider and then a RoyalBaby brand 14" bike (LOVE this Strider balance/transition bike at 3 years old!) He's 5 now and needs something bigger and it's been a debate between the larger RoyalBaby or this Schwinn. I read the reviews of both and decided to take a chance. Only used two days but so far so good. Husband put it together but it was very basic and he didn't have a Q. A star splicing as there was no Allen key included and we couldn't find ours at the time so it was a little awkward. Took no more than 20 minutes to assemble Pros: 18" Great size for my medium size size 5 le t. We argued between 16 and 18 inches and settled on 18 inches and we're glad we did! The handlebars also rise to keep growing with my child and the seat! Rim brakes AND foot brake! Step! Not everything that comes with training wheels has this and since we don't need training wheels I was happy to see that we didn't have to buy an extra stand. Good weight - not too heavy by bike standards and not too cheap to the touch. Cons: no Allen key for easy assembly. The footrest is very difficult for my 5 year old, although I'm not sure if this is a minus for the bike or just my child's age/skill. I'll update this review if any of those thoughts change, but so far so good! My son MUST have had a blue bike and I'm glad we jumped straight from the 14" to this 18" as he is doing well with it now and it will continue to grow with him. He rode it two days in a row!

Pros
  • Quality build
Cons
  • Pretty much everything is fine
