If you are connecting to the male console port of a managed switch, there are alternatives.

Got this to connect to Cisco SG300-10 managed switch/router. What I didn't realize was that this one had a male end and I needed a female end. This eventually worked and I paired it with a DB9 male to female converter I bought from Fry. RS232 serial cable DB9 converter female adapter with productive PL2303 chipset. It doesn't have to be the exact make/model, but this type of device does the same thing without a converter cable.
