Didn't work for me (issue with FTDI vs Prolific chipset?)

All connectors fit well (I studied the photos and didn't have any mechanical issues as some others have mentioned). But my Win10 computer didn't recognize my device with this cable. After reading some other reviews further I see a difference between FTDI and Prolific chipsets. I don't really get the technical stuff, but I'll buy a spare FDTI instead and give it a try. (You can search the reviews for FTDI or Prolific for more information.)

Pros
  • Pleasant to use
Cons

Be careful with sockets

It never occurred to me that someone would attach sockets to such a cable. Every serial port I tried to connect it to failed to connect due to gender conflicts. I've attached an image to show how the connectors block the port installation. Then I went back and looked at the pictures the manufacturer uses to say the cable will work and I'm having the same problem connecting to them. Maybe it's a great product from a functional standpoint, but it's a bad, bad design. My other USB-to-serial portโ€ฆ

Got this to connect to Cisco SG300-10 managed switch/router. What I didn't realize was that this one had a male end and I needed a female end. This eventually worked and I paired it with a DB9 male to female converter I bought from Fry. RS232 serial cable DB9 converter female adapter with productive PL2303 chipset. It doesn't have to be the exact make/model, but this type of device does the same thing without a converter cable.

Sockets to RS232 plugs?

Who would have thought someone would be stupid enough to put tight cap nuts on an RS-232 connector? This effectively makes it impossible to connect this cable to ANY female RS-232 port on ANY of my devices, unless I might break the nuts (the only visible way to remove them). Of course, the picture shows this cable plugged into some sort of RS-232 reverse jack that I've never seen in over 30 years. I think I'm ashamed that I didn't look at the picture, didn't take into account that the nuts areโ€ฆ

Make sure you buy the transmitter with the correct chipset

Bought to connect an old HP Agilent data logger to a new computer that doesn't have a serial port. Works great but keeps crashing (deleting the data file is useless). Installed updates to everything, reinstalled USB drivers, nothing helped. I finally read that the problem could be the performance of the chipset compared to the FTDI chipset. Bought a FTDI chipset converter and the problem was solved. So this device may work very well, but it didn't work for me and I will stick with devices withโ€ฆ

Four stars because the driver situation was a bit sketchy but it is an invaluable addition to my toolbox. It came with a driver CD, which seems a bit archaic given that a modern laptop is almost as likely to have an optical drive as a serial port. So it takes you to the Sabrent website, which is fine, and they have 32 and 64 bit drivers for all your modern operating systems, which is good and right. When I tried to download it, I was redirected to a third-party website that had a counterfeitโ€ฆ

Great chipset! on serial cables

The adapter works fine. I tried this on an HP laptop running Windows 10, it found the drivers straight away. I was able to use the update function in device manager and it found updated drivers. I also tried it on a Dell desktop with Windows 7 and it worked great there too. The only drawback are the side studs with internal thread. I wanted to use it in a rack where the PC and console connection device were in the same cabinet and 2.5 feet would be just right. With female connectors, you can'tโ€ฆ

Only people like me who use this USB3 port have problems

Works on Windows 7, 8.1 and Windows 10. Use to control multiple telescopes from Astrophysics, Celestron and Synta (Orion and Skywatcher). Windows 10 update 1803 corrupted the serial to USB driver. This is how I fixed it on my MSI gaming laptop. Reboot with item disconnected and then reboot again. After my laptop fully rebooted, I uninstalled the old driver, rebooted again, then plugged the adapter into a USB2 port on my laptop and it worked. Only people like me using this in a USB3 port or aโ€ฆ

Works well if you know what you're doing

I bought this programming cable for old radios that use a 9 pin serial programming cable and I wanted to use my Windows 7-10 laptops. I had an issue that I assume others will have, older software might be looking for a COM1 port, and computers with only a USB port might be labeled somewhere between COM3-16+. COM1 used to be a 9-pin serial port and COM2 was a printer port on older computers. Here's what to do to fix the problem. After downloading the driver, connect the cable to the USB portโ€ฆ
