Works well if you know what you're doing

I bought this programming cable for old radios that use a 9 pin serial programming cable and I wanted to use my Windows 7-10 laptops. I had an issue that I assume others will have, older software might be looking for a COM1 port, and computers with only a USB port might be labeled somewhere between COM3-16+. COM1 used to be a 9-pin serial port and COM2 was a printer port on older computers. Here's what to do to fix the problem. After downloading the driver, connect the cable to the USB port, and then search your computer for "Device Manager". You may need to go into settings and type device manager in the search bar. Device Manager lists everything on your computer and what is connected to it. Under the "Ports (COM & LPT)" heading, you should see "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port with the selected COM port at the end". Right-click on it and choose Properties. Select the Port Settings tab and then select the Advanced button. Once here you should see in the middle of the page where you can change the COM port number as required by your software. I hope this helps some of you when you want to use this adapter cable no matter what kind of software you want to use. Keep in mind that some of the older programs you may want to use may not be compatible with Windows 7-10, so you may need to run them on a Windows XP system. Much luck.

Pros
  • Easy to Install: Plug & Play - just plug your device into the adapter and the adapter into your PC or Mac.
Cons
  • Not bad but...
