If you don't soak them you only have yourself to blame. I did a quick test from the same tree. Part, part was lit with nothing and the other was pre-soaked in my favorite aroma oil. I just keep a small sealed container of wicks to soak and let dry before throwing in the candle. I've found that you can sometimes get away with pre-soaking with wood wicks depending on the type of wax used, but you'll definitely get better flames and more cracking with pre-soaking.
