Battery compartment leaks! Gasket too flimsy!

We have a pond on our property and have many R/C water crafts in our collection that get lots of use among our large family. I wanted to try this boat out because it had a different style remote than our other boats and I liked the idea of an LCD screen that helped you monitor battery life. This boat is fast, but so are our other boats. The problem lies with the top battery compartment. To access the battery you pop the top of the boat. This boat is cheaply made and only has one gasket in the lid. After 10 minutes in the water, the boat became unresponsive, sort of herky-jerky in it's movements and considerably slower. After slowly bringing the boat to shore, we lifted off the top and poured out water! The battery compartment was completely filled with water! Now let me remind you, we are experienced R/C boat drivers, it's not like this was our first experience and we were rolling the boat and repeatedly capsizing it or crashing it into things. Also, we were using it in a very calm spring fed pond without any waves, algae, or other such turbulence or obstacles. When we got the boat dried off and we were able to compare this boat to our others, it was very evident how cheaply made this boat is. Perhaps the money went into the fancy remote and they skimped on the design of the boat! Our other boats have rubber gaskets on both the lid and boat that form a double barrier. Some of our boats even have double doors, each with double gaskets, as in you lift off the top colored hatch and then there is a secondary flat lid underneath to further protect the battery compartment. This boat only has a thin foam gasket in the lid, like the kind of thing you might put around your air-conditioner for insulation. It is not water tight and a complete waste of money! Why would you make a water craft that was not water tight? Another poor design feature is with the rudder, when turning to the boat to the right, the internal control hits the battery compartment, blocking the rudder from moving. Going left is no problem, but you will not be able to make sharp right turns due to the poor internal workings of this boat. I am pointing to this in my photo, see how the white piece is up against the black battery pocket? It doesn't do this in the other direction. Perhaps Quality Control inspector #3 missed this! Pass on this boat, there are way better options out there for a similar price!

Pros
  • Creat Gift Idea
Cons
  • The toy requires a lot of open space to operate safely, making it unsuitable for smaller backyards or parks
