Review on Silicone Intercooler Hoses for Subaru Impreza WRX 2001-2005 Red - Mishimoto MMHOSE-SUB-INTRD by Paul Mac

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Very satisfied, but maybe flatbread.

Purchased an intercooler hose kit to replace/upgrade the stock hoses on my 02 Wrx. I didn't suspect any issues with the stock hoses but they are of much lower quality and the stock Y-tube hoses are actually hard plastic and quite limited and most of what you can get comes from retrofitting the Y-tube. First of all the hoses are great quality, I bought the red kit to contrast with the engine bay and it looks fantastic. The hoses are very flexible but feel strong. However, the supplied clamps were just crap to say the least. You will get 2 for the throttle body to the intercooler, 3 for the Y-pipe and 2 for the wastegate on the turbo. All were too small and deformed. I couldn't fix them so I used the old ones. I would suggest buying hose clamps to replace the spring clamps on the bpv to turbo hose. The install was decent except for the damn hose from the bpv to the turbo, even with the use of oil to get it in place it was stubborn. I noticed it was a bit shorter compared to my stock so I had to line it up with the inlet and just enough bvp so I could pinch it. Interestingly, I'm not sure if they changed the design of the hoses (unless I went with a shorter one) as others on the forums have said they had to cut their hoses to fit since they were slightly longer. The other 2 hoses were easy to install. Finally, performance-wise, the turbo seems a little lighter and revs up sooner, maybe a few hundred rpm sooner, and a little more audibly too. I don't have a hotspot or a way to log data and get stats, but I do have a boost sensor (factory Lamco). In normal light riding (2500-2800 shifts) where I tend to avoid boost to avoid problems, I actually get boost by generating around 1-3psi depending on the gear instead of being under 0. To be honest I was hesitant to shell out 100 for a couple of hoses, but being in Arizona I felt it was a good mod for reliability and I read bad stories about people blowing up a replacement pipe and were forced to be towed. I will update the review with my dyno results when I get back to my normal driving habits. Update: The turbo definitely feels like it wants to spin more and sooner than it did before it was installed. I don't suspect any leaks when hitting my boost targets, so the noise I'm hearing must be from the turbo, which makes sense as even below 7psi it's only audible on boost. I would recommend this to anyone considering a replacement/upgrade. Standard hoses even $100, although I wish the supplied clamps could be used as clamps aren't the cheapest. Maybe they offer a clampless kit to save on the wallet.
