This worked exactly as I had hoped. It shut off a few hours after I unpacked it, but after that there was no smell at all. It is very easy and intuitive to assemble. I put my Cricut stuff against the back wall. It was unobtrusive so I can still access other stuff in my closet. I also love how easy it was to hang the ribbon from the wires on my shelf. If you plan to hang it normally in the closet, I would recommend double sided. I mostly have relatively small diameter Cricut rolls, but one roll was much thicker and fits with enough room. I'm a big fan of using vertical space. It was just right for me.
