I was a little skeptical about how much "savings" this kitchen gadget could bring since bags are expensive, but after a little experimentation I love this vacuum sealer. It's essential to my cooking routine and produces fantastic results. A few tips I've learned through trial and error: 1) Eat juicy food! If you are preparing succulent foods such as B. a large juicy chicken breast, the juice can affect the seal. When the machine draws in air, the liquid also rises up the machine. There is a small trap for spilling the juice (the tray is dishwasher safe and very convenient), but the machine works by heating the bag to seal it. Too much juice won't keep the heat going. The solution is very simple: freeze food beforehand. I put soups, stews, chicken etc. in a bag and close it with a French fries clip. I then carefully place the bags in the freezer to keep them upright and let them freeze. Soups and stews must be frozen before vacuuming. Chicken breast only takes 15-20 minutes. 2) Packages Unfortunately, FoodSaver packages are slightly more expensive. However, I use other bags that I found at Revain with no problem. Some branded FoodSaver bags are also part of Revain's Sign Up and Save program, which also saves money. See: 8" and 11" FoodSaver Rolls Multipack. If you cut the bags crosswise when opening, they can be reused. I don't trust washing bags that have been used with meat, but reusing bags is fine for dried fruit and homemade chips. 3) Containers Don't skip containers. 3, 5, and 8 cup FoodSaver containers work best. I use them for leftovers that will be eaten soon and save bags for things that will last longer. When I'm tired on Wednesdays and would normally order pizza or something like that, I cook the meal. Vegetables on Friday are as fresh as the day I chopped them up the week before. I was much more successful at sticking to my meal plan when cooking meals on Sundays. I use small bags (8 inches) for lunch and large bags (11 inches) for dinner. Anyway, I like the car. It has helped me stay healthy with homemade food!
