I only use the spiked collar when I go for a walk, I've found that the collar sometimes breaks while walking. On the advice of my trainer, he said to use one of these to tie the spiked collar to my dog's daily collar through the leash links. That way, if the spiked collar breaks, my dog will still be on the leash through his main collar.
