Even when plugged into an external power supply, the hub won't charge anything unless it's also plugged into a booted computer. This means it's useless for charging if it's on, if the power light is on, but your laptop is in sleep mode or the lid is closed. You can't fool it by plugging the host connection into another powered USB port; it is only charged when it detects a running operating system on the host port. There is no reference to this seemingly obvious lack of functionality in the product description. I feel cheated. I spoke to a StarTech support rep who also considered this a design and description error, although he confirmed that this behavior is not a defect and the hub cannot be returned.
