It was a bit difficult for me to learn how to use it, but I think that was mainly because I had never used a flash before. Once I figured out the right settings on my Canon 6d it was amazing. I can take close-up shots of insects in my garden in much worse light than without and get great fill flash when the sun is out. It doesn't drain rechargeable batteries, but I can shoot for hours on a set of batteries I bought for it. The only thing that frustrates me is that with a shutter speed limited to 1/180 I can't use it with my Sigma 150mm macro lens because the lens needs a shutter speed higher than 1/250 to avoid blur, with or without flash. . With my Canon 100mm macro lens, that's no problem and the shots are great. I also found that some flies really don't like the flash and fly away before the shutter even opens. But most insects don't seem to notice it at all.
