I have not tested them for water resistance by throwing my mattress in the lake but this item is THICC. You'll need at least a few jabs with a sharp knife to cut it open. The handles are also made of very durable plastic. Not very comfortable to hold for long periods of time, but they do the job well and definitely won't break. If you're wearing gloves, you probably won't notice. Mine was a bit dusty or at least had an odd coating on the surface. It also smelled of cigarette smoke and new shoes, but otherwise it was in excellent condition. I was afraid it wouldn't fit my very thick mattress but in the end it turned out to be just the right size, if not then a little more. They definitely give you some wiggle room to work on your mattress size.
