The original handles (manufacturer unknown) felt uncomfortable in the hand, but the slot on the valve stem could not be adjusted with any replacement parts after research in normal hardware stores and on the Internet. The included adapter solved this problem perfectly. The deception was as follows: the end of the original valve stem did not protrude past the overhead tube that hides the stem. This presented the problem of not accessing the bolts for tightening the "vise" adapter when placed on the splined end of the valve stem. This was fixed by unscrewing the trim tubes. Then install the vise adapter. Then reinstall the trim tube. When it comes time to attach the handle to the handle, you will need to line up the notches on the "vise" adapter with the inside of the handle. Then install the handle locking screw. I had to use the long spacer provided to keep the handles from touching the shower wall. To properly align the long spacer (if used) with the vise and handle, insert the appropriate long set screw into the handle and spacer and align the spacer within the handle. Then align the other end of the spacer with the slots in the "vise" and then tighten the handle mounting screw. There is only one gasket in the kit so the guide to choosing the best gasket makes no sense. If the length of the spacer is too long I think it could be cut with a hacksaw but the length of the handle set screw would also need to be trimmed. Included in the kit are 3 different types of long locking screws that can be used when using a long spacer. . Everyone has a different thread pitch, so check which one is correct before installing and tightening the handle.
