My girlfriend's 2011 (mid) iMac 21.5 died a slow death. Every time she turned on the machine, it took more than 10 minutes to start, programs slowed down to a bare minimum, just waiting for everything to come to a place where you could use it. She turned it on, went and made herself some coffee, and when she was halfway through a cup, the machine was ready. At first I thought it was a virus or adware bloating their system. Then I thought it was because it was taking up too much disk space. It wasn't until I went into the hardware monitor that I realized she was using 3.5GB of her 4GB of RAM. Newer versions of Mac OSX need to use a lot more memory than the original version your computer ran on. I bought two of these DIMMs, unscrewed the bottom 3 screws, put them in and turned on the computer. There was an immediate HUGE difference in speed. She was up and running in less than half the time. Everything became faster and programs started much faster. The next step is to replace the HDD with an SSD and this system will fly. At this point, around $24 in cheap RAM was more than enough to give you a significant boost in performance!
