We have a waterfront home with a basement (not recommended). A few years after we bought it, the single (non-submersible) drain pump failed and the basement had 12 inches of water. Thus began my training in hydraulic pressure and the art of removing groundwater before it could do any harm. a second shaft was installed and connected to the existing shaft in the basement. Two pumps were installed and one in the new larger sump was lower meaning it was the main pump. I also isolated each pump to separate the circuits in case a short occurs.
