Review on πŸŽ™οΈ Capture Crisp Audio with the Olympus VN-702PC Voice Recorder by Kev See

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good but not great for digital voice recorders

I've had better sound and functionality with an old VN-960PC (no longer in production). I don't know why Olympus can't release another recorder of the same quality. With this device, Olympus chose to make it slim, resulting in excessive length. It takes forever to run - just a few seconds, but it can seem like a long time when you want to capture a thought or sound instantly. Worse, if you tried to start it by pressing record, another surprise awaits you: it still won't record, even after the start delay has expired. There's plenty of information on the display, but that also means there's plenty of room for scratches. It's hard to control by touch - you have to look at it to make sure it's doing what you want it to. The folder button works fine in my pocket: suddenly I'm dictating into another folder. There is no blinking indicator to show that recording is paused. Since you can't tell what's happening by touch or by the lights available, I'd like to see something like the Timex Indiglo option so you can read in the dark. It could have more options for date and time display (e.g. current time) and font size. Relatively poor audio pickup - it loses sounds that some older models would have picked up. Poor speaker quality. The playback circuit does not cope with the recording speed of 192 kbps - the sound is very quiet and breaks off during playback. There seems to be an emphasis on absurdly long recording possibilities (like 91 hours) that detract from other features. The pause button makes an audible click each time it is pressed. I would like an easy way to add additional notes to the previous entry. On the plus side, file browsing is vastly improved over some previous models. I like that the file creation time is visible in Windows Explorer. A useful option is to use flash memory cards. The battery indicator has been improved.

Pros
  • Good workmanship
Cons
  • It's driving me insane
