The original base for my magnifying lamp (seen in the background) was plastic, hollow in places and after years of use began to crack under 45 degree base angle stress. The lamp/magnifier is still in great condition and meets my needs which has prevented me from buying a new lamp and trying to replace the base. I found this item strong, sturdy and well suited for my purposes. Originally I intended to place the clamp on top of my desk where the first base would be placed, but the dimensions of the new device, the screw shaft, were no smaller than the bottom of the drawer (where the keyboard would be). However, placing it on a drawer also helps to protect the lamp. Clearance Information: The clearance between the bottom of the table top and the drawer is approximately 2 5/8 inches and the thickness of the table top is approximately 5/8 inches. If these dimensions match your dimensions, then this device doesn't fit in between. Where the lamp enters the unit there is a tension screw that can be adjusted to either fully tighten the lamp/microphone/camera to prevent wiggling or, in my case, allow some rotation to accommodate mine to move the lamp away from the table.
