We have moved to a new house; As soon as we moved in, we saw a code on our dryer indicating that either the dryer hood was too long or we had accumulated lint. The run was about 30 feet; but the effective distance was 40 feet with two 90 degree turns. We started by cleaning the exhaust pipe; We removed about a five-gallon bucket full of previous owner lint. Unfortunately, after removing the lint, we still got the code; So we bought both a Tjerlund fan and a lint filter. We installed both and immediately got an error message (flashing red light) indicating heat build-up. It made no sense as our line was cold for several days and didn't run long enough to warm up before a glitch occurred. I called customer service on a Sunday (when they weren't open) and left a message. We did not get an answer; So I called a few days later. On my second call I got a very friendly technician on the line. He clearly had access to the knowledge base and looked at various scenarios that may have caused my problem. After spending some time diagnosing over the phone, we determined that the problem was with a cable on the fan assembly; the insulation on this wire has not been adequately stripped. Quick setup and everything worked as expected. We've had it successfully installed for about two weeks now. Sometimes when the dryer is running late at night and the house is quiet you can hear it running; but generally pretty quiet. 6 people live in our house; So, our dryer works a ton. In just two weeks we already had to clean the newly added built-in lint collector (already got the code back on our dryer); So that shows how much lint actually ends up in the dryer's lint filter. It's nice to know that we can clean this simple lint collector regularly and hopefully not have to worry about lots of lint clogging our system or even having to keep the fan running. Ideally, it would be great if the fan was fully operational on day one and there was no need to call the helpdesk; But the technician was very helpful. I could tell he really cared about making sure it worked. If the diagnostics hadn't fixed the problem, he would have had no trouble getting me back on Amazon, especially for the first thirty days. My advice to people buying this product: - Don't buy it unless you plan on a relatively quick install. I wouldn't want to risk owning it for a while and then try to get it back after the 30 day window. Make sure you look at your existing dryer exhaust ducting to consider how you may need to install it and read the technical installation manual. There are very strict rules as to where to mount it in the line (distance to fan with or without lint screen added, distance to end of line, distance to 90 degree turns). You want to make sure you can install this in your home before you buy it and also think about how to hang it in that particular place. I had to build a 2x4 frame and hang a fan on it to keep the fan in the perfect spot. - You should NOT buy this if your effective distance is less than 30ft (total tube length + 5ft). for each 90 degree rotation). Count before you buy, otherwise you can't use the fan. That's one of the first questions the technician asked me. Just buy an extra lint catcher. It works and is nice to have. This saves me from having to frequently clean the exhaust pipe and extends the life of the fan. Consider installing on a weekday so you can easily contact support if you have any problems. - Plan that the installation is suitable if you need the dryer frequently and especially if you install it on weekends when the helpdesk is closed. We run our dryer several times a day. When we installed that and the fan didn't work, we were SOL until it worked again. I had to remove the fan and then try to reattach the exhaust duct. It's not easy when you've modified the entire exhaust line to now mount the offset fan (as opposed to the built-in one). You should have extra air ducts and foil tape on hand to make any adjustments and be ready to reset everything if there is a problem (or not have a working dryer until it works). If you follow the advice above, I suspect the fan will work for most setups; I only suggest that you are prepared in case you are not.
