I am not a professional mechanic but I have used several scanners and readers on various vehicles I have repaired over the years. from classic OBD2 reader type ELM327 that connects to your smartphone, Toyota Techstream and Ross Tech cables (for VW/Audi/Porsche) with dealer level software and Foxwell NT644. Working with a newer vehicle will most likely mean reading more than just checking engine light codes (CEL/MIL) but being able to scan all modules in the vehicle for trouble codes and dates. a depth scanner/reader that can give you manufacturer-specific codes and diagnostics that you can't get in your regular $29 Walmart OBD2 reader. Additionally, you can use customizable real-time data to perform actions such as vacuum leak detection, fuel trim, DPF regeneration statistics, OBD2 emissions readiness (checking if your vehicle is ready for an emissions test), etc. It also supports some bi-directional functions (i.e. not only does the device read the codes and display them on the screen, you can direct the device to perform a number of special functions on the vehicle such as resetting, driving manipulation, etc.). It doesn't have the versatility of the snap-on, but I'm not paying $3,000 for it either. Pros: - Sleek color touchscreen Android interface that makes navigation easy - hands down the best interface I've used at this price point - Ability to get real-time data from the ECM and most other modules that support data and the ability to read graphical display of this data is amazing. You can see O2 sensor fluctuations, real-time engine fuel adjustments, etc. - Offline power on without OBD2 connection, which is handy for updates or viewing previous scans etc. - Updates via WiFi, while at Foxwell you need to download the software and update the SD card that is connected to it. - Greater VIN recognition capability compared to Foxwell and more model/feature support. - Ability to save and email vehicle scan reports. If someone asks you to scan their car, you can easily send them a report. Has an Android browser that allows you to check Google codes when using WiFi. Cons: - Launch gives you updates for 1 year from activation/purchase date. So if you plan to use it for several years, you'll have to pay a subscription every year to keep it updated with the latest models. Their website doesn't explain how to buy updated software after a year. Some special functions do not work - for example the forced DPF regeneration on a VW/Audi TDI requires access via the security system and this causes the problem and triggers an error. I can do a DPF regeneration with Ross-Tech but not with this device. EPB and Oil reset seems to work on most vehicles. Bottom Line: If you're an auto enthusiast who needs the ability to read live data for diagnostics and be able to connect to manufacturer codes in your computer systems without paying thousands for snap-on scanners or multiple trips to the store/dealer and you don't need the latest updates and in a year you will get this tool. This tool has already saved me, my family and friends thousands in diagnostic costs.
