I don't know why or why it has such a low rating maybe because there are mostly idiots here who know NOTHING about HDTV. Look, I'm a techie! I know what I am doing! Although I'm not sure about the rest of the world. This player is a PERFECT 10! Toshiba definitely knows HD, they do it RIGHT! Although this DVD player is not quite HD, it outputs a 1080i signal. It can be converted and sharpened to get so close to HD that your regular DVDs will look better than ever! I can only imagine what their HD DVD player looks like, I'll get it soon! To explain this a little better for those who might not be as tech savvy as others: Think of a DVD as a box packed to the brim. It's so full that nothing else fits in. And think of this DVD player as the one that needs to open the "BOX”. Basically, a DVD is "shared" and opened/decompressed into a DVD player. The DVD player then processes the pixels and adapts them to the screen size as best as possible. With your HDTV it knows it's formatted in 16:9 and depending on your focal length resolution whether 480i - 720p - 1080i it will automatically be processed to the highest standard for your TV, giving you a better picture and more for GET YOUR MONEY BETTER THAN Fuzzy Audio/Video Cables, the HDMI connector/cable is the most advanced Hi-Def connector/cable in the known universe. Of course it was designed by SONY, the only #1 brand not overflowing with bologna! If you have an HD TV but can't afford a NEW Toshiba HD DVD player, get it! Not only will you save time but also more money than trying to find the right one, buy this one!
