I ended up filling my reservoir while the return hose was unhooked and all the liquid drained straight onto the garage floor at the same time. started the car to flush out the old fluid and of course the new fluid drained out VERY quickly (using what hadn't fallen out of the container on the floor) and tons of air bubbles formed in the system.
