These pillows are filled with shredded memory foam and like most memory foam items will need to be aired out before use. They were pressed quite tightly in plastic, but puffed up a lot after being removed from the packaging. However, you should set them aside to grow and preferably in another well-ventilated room as they have a very strong plastic smell. Memory foam will gas out for at least a day or two, and this isn't the kind of smell you want to deal with while you sleep. Washing removable covers also helps. They come with extra foam filling in vacuum bags in case you want to fill the pillows more, but to be honest they are so huge that I'm actually considering going with them and just leaving the rest for later. Surprisingly heavy which I like and very comfortable with soft foam.
