They are VERY sturdy. I have an old Ducane and replaced the top grate with a gravel pack that I cut to size. Basically it is a wire mesh. They don't really clean it as they are so inflexible that they can't get into the groves. Maybe for a standard grille, but I highly doubt it. They are really high quality, but not suitable for this purpose.
