By the way, spoiler alert. I think this is the most controversial season of Supernatural among fans. Despite some strong individual episodes and the season's ambitious long story arc, the whole ends up being less than the sum of the parts. Apparently this was the right course with the introduction of Leviathan as the villain throughout the season. Conceptually, Leviathan is astounding - villains who have been imprisoned for all time are released into the world; They can look like anyone and easily blend into society. They have a master plan to enslave humanity. That's a great idea. In practice, this has not proven itself. Despite some chilling, vaguely disturbing appearances from James Patrick Stewart as their leader, the Leviathan menace somehow didn't feel "real" and was instead more of a complex puzzle to solve than an enemy to defeat. The last few episodes as Sam and Dean learn how to kill the Leviathan, collect the weapon components and eventually manage to kill Dick Roman make for an engaging and entertaining viewing experience. And still. . Well, Kevin Trans' wacky line to Sam "Dick's got the cream, he'll kill all the skinny folks" is sadly a ridiculous moment in an extended episode. And yet, despite all the difficulties, the result seemed too easy. Individual episodes have also been controversial - some, like "Very Important", deserve multiple views. Others, like "Party on the Garth", aim for humor and/or whimsical and then get overlooked. I think it's fair to say that Season 7 is a great example of storytelling ambitions and a great example of a creative team that isn't quite ready to fulfill their storytelling ambitions. Season 7, however, sets up a number of important future plots, namely the Tablets of the Gods and Dean's Year in Purgatory; and he introduced Charlie Bradbury and Kevin Tran as characters who are both on their way to becoming important (albeit in very different ways). struggled to find his creative footing after a long 5-season story arc (seasons 1-5). When season 7 doesn't quite work on its own, it manages to create seasons 8, 9, and 10, which were engaging and entertaining. Season 7 remains mixed for me - on second viewing it's better than the first, arguably Supernatural's most disappointing season.
