A Few Caves About This Excellent Device

I rated this kid's device so my comments wouldn't get buried in a bunch of overly positive 'reviews'. This is a unique device, what Franklin Electronic "books" usually are. I have had 2 Franklin Bookman products for several years, each with slots for additional Bookman books (own ROM cards). I complain that Franklin hasn't written enough books for her. I have a college dictionary, a bible, a short encyclopedia, and a Spanish-English dictionary. Aside from my complaint that Franklin didn't put out enough reference books for them, I complain that Franklin has completely failed Bookman's owners (they could easily keep publishing new "books"). They also relinquished ownership of the original Bookman equipment when they released the Bookman II. I have a PC connection so you can download eBooks and install them on blank ROM cards. Franklin switched to Bookman II and never released a PC interconnect cable and they never made blank ROM cards. Before anyone seriously spends money on Franklin products, here's what you can find out about Franklin Books: They're software-free. They leave customers in trouble. The quality of the Franklin devices was high. I have not had a single faulty device or book from Franklin. The old ones are sold on eBay at a price above list price. I ordered this KID-1240 for my very smart but opinionated 8 year old granddaughter. I don't understand the complaints that the dictionary has too few words. It has 44,000 words. Was the reviewer expecting an encyclopedia or a full Oxford dictionary? Positive sides. I took a close look at it and checked its functions. The device is of high quality and works well, which is what I have come to expect from Franklin. One feature I haven't mentioned will be of interest to parents. The device speaks each letter aloud as you type, but doesn't speak slang words, eliminating almost all "dirty" words. The speaker is much better than the speaker in the original Franklin Bookman units, but I think Franklin could have done better given the space allotted to the speaker. I've seen smaller computing devices with better speakers. However, unlike previous Franklin devices, the speaker is clear and loud enough for personal use. minuses. The design of the battery compartment and the door should have been better. Most children between the ages of 6 and 9 should not change batteries themselves. There is a real risk of breaking the landing door or losing a tiny screw. Breaking down the door is a game changer. Screw loss - no. Inserting 4 AAA batteries is a bit tricky. Overall, I believe KID 1240 is what Franklin claims it is. This is not a complete dictionary. It is not a tutor or e-parent.
