Review on Wireless 8Bitdo PCE 2.4G Gamepad: Connects to PC Engine Mini, CoreGrafx Mini, TurboGrafx-16 Mini & Nintendo Switch (PCE Edition) by Dan Quiceno

Great for more than just PCE Mini/Switch

I bought this controller mainly because I've always been a big fan of 8BitDo products. So far I've had a version of every controller they've sold and when I saw this thing I bought it, although it wasn't huge on Turbografx/PCE because it turned out to work on Windows too. I was a little disappointed to hear a few days after ordering that Amazon's response section says this controller cannot be used on Windows with an adapter - it must be plugged in. That's a lie. I don't know why 8BitDo's answers on Amazon are wrong here, but they are. The controllers work in Windows with an adapter, i.e. wirelessly. Yes, it's defined as direct input, but it doesn't matter to emulators, and if you want to play something with them on Steam, you can just use a program like Xoutput to fix the direct input situation. The build quality of these guys, like the rest of the 8BitDo range, is fantastic. It's like a first person controller! The buttons have just the perfect number of clicks and the circular directional pad registers inputs satisfactorily. In fact, the face buttons are EXACTLY similar to those on the new NES controller. Now there is a caveat that someone like me didn't expect. For most 8BitDo controllers, Turbo mode works like this: you hold down a special button and press another, and the button you choose goes into "Turbo mode”. So I was expecting this to give me four face buttons to work in Xoutput or emulators, but instead it doesn't really do that. The two face buttons above the bottom two map to the same input in the controller itself as the buttons below. This means that, to my knowledge, the top two buttons always work permanently as versions of the A and B buttons below, rather than being able to use the four face buttons. This can be an issue depending on what you want to play with this controller. This leaves me with quite a few people who want to use it on Windows and wonder who it's for. Simply put, it's going to be my main NES/GBC emulation controller now, in addition to a few other games on Steam like Mega Man 9 and 10. Seriously, it's great for that. Basically it's the best NES pad ever - rounded sides, amazing buttons, round D-pad I could faint over - seriously, it doesn't get much better for some NES or GBC. And you still have those turbo buttons with easy, always-on access, just like your own buttons. So, that's my take on this controller. As someone wanting one for the PCE/Turbografx mini I would say you should definitely buy these, they are fantastic. But even for me, the person who doesn't have this console and just loves the 8BitDo controllers, I have a reason to own this and seriously, it's still different and a nice feel to some of my other 8BitDo controllers consoles to use with safety. . I need to star dock it because the two buttons on the top bar aren't buttons you can use outside of the A and B Tubro buttons as I could easily find a lot more options to play with this controller if I could map those X and Y in Windows, but this controller is an easy recommendation of mine if you want to play NES/GBC or, you know. The mini console for which it was specially made.
