TLDR: The only improvement over Gen 1/Gen 2 E8 is battery life and smaller size. The sound quality falls far short of the original. The right earbud broke after less than 24 hours of use. I bought these after having a reliable pair of Gen 1 E8 headphones which I really liked. I think I'm lucky that they fit snugly in my ears and thanks to the tips, they pretty much cancel out all ambient noise for me. Great for plane/train travel and commuting, only downside was poor battery life. My Gen 1s were finally struggling with battery life after 2.5 years and I was looking for a new pair. I tried the new Master & Dynamic MW7 Plus headphones but ended up hating them. The noise-cancellation was a joke and they let in too much ambient noise, even at maximum volume and with appropriate advice. The lack of an app to adjust the equalizer was also a shortcoming for me. I was very excited when the Gen 3 E8s were announced and ordered a pair hoping it would build on the successes of the first gen by addressing its shortcomings (battery life, water resistance, better mics, etc.). You let me down immediately. The Gen 3 isn't nearly as powerful as the Gen 1, which I felt was a trade-off to improve battery life. When playing the same song at the same volume on Gen 1 and Gen 3, there was a noticeable difference in the amount of ambient noise penetrating. With Gen 1 I could go to the gym and turn the volume up to 75% and be isolated from any music playing on their stereo, but with Gen 3 even at 100% volume I could hear the music outside playing at the gym pretty well . The new B&O app is terrible too. I refused to remove the old BeoPlay app from my phone because not only could you run over the small dot on the Touch Tone EQ, but you could also pinch a larger dot with your fingers to expand the soundstage. Which in my opinion gives the Gen 1/2 E8 a huge advantage in terms of sound quality. You feel like you're in the middle of the music, not in front of you. I have no idea why B&O removed this feature in the new app, but it would be nice if they brought it back. Finally, the death knell for me was that they broke in less than 24 hours of my use. I took off the right earbud to talk to someone in my office and when I put it back in my ear there was suddenly a significant volume difference between the left and right earbuds. I've tried pairing them again, reinstalling the B&O app and factory resetting the earbuds to no avail. The left earbud works fine and still runs at full volume, but even at maximum volume, the right earbud outputs a maximum of 1/3 of the maximum volume. or Sony. B&O is kidding themselves if they think they can sell it for $350 while the $100 off Gen 2 is a much better product.
