Review on Seek Thermal Compact All Purpose Imaging by Tim Knoepfle

Really terrible camera and the app tracks everything you do.

I purchased this camera (Seek Compact XR) after using the FLIR C2 for work and was so impressed I decided I needed a personal HVAC/comfort camera. I was very excited to get this and do all that "oh interesting" before using it to track leaks in home insulation and I just received it today. I have two main problems with this camera. The first problem is that after downloading the Seek Thermal official app, it asks for 4 permissions and without all 4 the app closes: 1: access my phone's camera2: access my phone's data3: access my phone's microphone4 : Accessing my location's camera access sounded reasonable enough until I discovered that the app wouldn't use my phone's camera for overlays or any other purpose I could discern. Data access seems adequate for storing videos and images. Microphone access sounded fair for video too, but I didn't even capture a video to see if it was actually recording that audio for playback. When I closed the app it still showed accessing the mic. Location access is completely unnecessary. This would approximate GPS coordinates for your location when using the app but still accessed your location when the app was closed. To sum up point 1, it seems like the app is supposed to be tracking you for some unknown reason, and it's totally unnecessary. My second problem is that the permission is garbage. Hot, smelly, smelly, useless garbage. I used it for a hot cup of coffee around the room and it told me the steaming mug was 99F in a 95F room (current conditions were 75F). With no overlay and low resolution, 95% of the time I couldn't even tell what I was looking at in the same room. The camera was constantly reconfiguring itself, getting stuck for half a second each time. This made it very difficult to walk through the 18x28 space in under a minute and I still haven't seen anything through it. To be honest I wouldn't recommend this to anyone unless they have hundreds of millions of dollars and are willing to spend money creatively.
