Review on πŸ“· Nikon COOLPIX S3100 14 MP Digital Camera - Black - with 5x NIKKOR Wide-Angle Optical Zoom Lens and 2.7-Inch LCD Screen by Tres Carmon

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Can't give more than 3 stars at the moment.

I will make it as easy as possible. Purchased with Transcend 16GB Class Six SDHC. I finally realized that megapixels doesn't tell the whole story. I set it to maximum resolution, the images didn't deviate far from my old Samsung which was only 3.1 megapixels. The camera is very portable but not as good as it looks, the 5X is great for an entry level camera. 1) The camera is quite slow with Class 6, I just ordered Sandisk Class 10 30M/s; Nikon told me that using an unapproved memory card is the reason my videos are limited to 8 minutes, approved ones are Panasonic, Toshiba, Sandisk and Lexar. I will find out on Monday. After I get a new card I'll see if the speed (the time between each shot) improves and then I'll update my review. 2) You can use digital zoom while recording video, but to be honest the quality is badly distorted. To be honest, the video doesn't feel like 720P at all. My iPhone 4 takes better pictures. I've come to the conclusion that many cameras with a 20M/s class 6 card are much faster than this one. My biggest problem is the speed problem. You may miss some nice shots just because of this and it may frustrate you. If you are looking for a compact camera for quick shots then this is not for you, you can try something else. My dad told me you get what you pay for, well he was right. I am very afraid that I might have to pay a little more. I hope this helps, ask me a question if you need information. (Update) I ended up returning it for the Canon ELPH 300 S and it knocks Nikon out of the water. Nikon did a better job with the Class 10 Sandisk than the Class 6 Transcend I originally bought, but that didn't change the fact that it can't record videos longer than 8 minutes, Nikon customer service told me communicated. I got scammed so I bought this expensive Sandisk. One thing I've noticed is that Canon is a lot faster with the Focus (remember it's about $85-$90 more than Nikon). My conclusion remains the same, Nikon s3100 is a slow camera, to make it decent you have to use SDHC class 10 at 30Mbps. I won't talk about HD video, that would be unfair to Nikon.
