We have an electrical engineer in house, very strong - and he had a hard time opening the battery to put it in. Edit: We finally opened it, but it wasn't easy. The clear acrylic container should be facing down and the Home Cooking Star label should be facing up, holding the metal strip and turning counter-clockwise. Once opened, re-opening is no problem. Try it now! Update - I really like this pepper mill. There are some issues with the roughness setting, but overall it does what it says on the tin! It's super convenient and quick, which is great since I make a health drink that uses pepper every night before bed!
