First of all, my wife and I have a typical story: one likes a soft bed, the other a hard surface. So there's no way to make us both happy. Yes, this includes this top layer. However, as someone who likes to sleep on a piece of plywood, I found this to be a workable compromise. We put a sleeping mattress on it, mine was still firm (70) and my wife was soft (30). For the first time in months, my wife woke up with no back or hip pain. I had a hard time falling asleep the first night (which is unusual) but I think I can get used to it. I will update if anything changes. The bottom line is that it softens the surface without sacrificing the firmness or softness of the main mattress.
