Bought to protect the mt iPad as my little grandchildren always want it. Didn't know the part that allows you to hold a pen can be found in newer iPad models, but mine doesn't add bulk to the holder. This makes it almost an inch taller. Even if you don't have a pencil, the remaining open area is perfect for small children's fingers, and the edges inside are not rounded and can scratch them. I think a good product if you have a pencil model and it seems to hold up well to rough handling.
