Review on πŸ“Ÿ GQ Gamma Radiation Detection Equipment - GMC 320Plus Full Kit by Eric Pavelko

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A little rough around the edges but seems to work pretty well.

This is a nice little device, I've had it for about a month and have had very few problems with it. Pros: The battery life you want for your smartphone. I got 3 days of battery life with sleep mode off, speaker on and backlight on the lowest level with power remaining. Sufficiently sensitive for background measurements. The logging functions seem to be working. I set it to every second and get about a week's worth of stored readings. Multiple display options, I usually leave it in text mode and look at the CPM and total readings first. The cheapest gauge that offered logging capabilities that I could find. Cons: The buttons are a little hard to press and get the device to register them, it seemed to get better with use as the buttons seemed to need a 'break-in' period. The mini USB connection is too easy to be accidentally disconnected. (GQ mentions a seemingly simple fix on their forums, but I haven't tried it yet.) Short timeouts on menu options mean you have to be prepared to hit the right button at the right time. Motion detection is a bit sensitive and often doesn't turn off the backlight/speaker when the device is on its back. I'm sure some firmware adjustments can fix the problem. Some readings: Fon (near Raleigh, NC) 15-18 CPMB -45 CPM (very variable) Potassium bicarbonate in plastic bag next to GM pipe: 28 CPM (average over 11 hours) Ashtray "depression glass" 29 CPM Lantern fairings ( old type containing thorium) 1200-1500 CPM 20 CPM = 0.1 Β΅Sv/h (judging by the display, I have no idea what the source is) was calibrated)
