Review on ConairMAN i-Stubble Cordless Flexhead Beard Trimmer for Men - Ultimate Performance by Michelle Frey

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Excellent trimmer - but only as long as it lasts

I've been using this trimmer for 5 full years. Here's a timeline of how my attitude towards this trimmer has changed: 2014 - Thing works great! It has a lot of power for something that uses a battery and I get about 3 full haircuts before needing a charge. I love the adjustable head and how I can fine tune the smaller sizes to keep my beard looking perfect. I also like that I can remove the guard to free up my neck and get more defined beard lines on my face. The only thing that confuses me is that it's still difficult to cut close to the nostrils. But most razors this size have the same problem, so I'm not too upset about it. 2015 - Thing still works great but starts dying earlier and earlier. I'll be lucky if I can cut my face twice without charging it. I start plugging it into the charger after each use, which is a large AC wall adapter with a long 5ft cord. It's just a minor inconvenience, so I still really like this thing. 2016 The battery now only lasts for one full trimming session so I decided to replace it. Well, it turns out that the battery is not only branded, but also soldered into the device. Without a soldering iron, I have no way of replacing the battery. The good news is that if it dies before I'm done I can just charge it for another 15 minutes, come back and finish the job. So I'll keep doing this - again, this is just a minor inconvenience and I'm willing to take care of it for now. 2017 - Now the battery is completely discharged. When not plugged in, it only works for about 10 seconds. Again, I can't replace this battery without soldering and somehow get a branded replacement battery that ConAir doesn't sell. However, the trimmer STILL works if I keep it plugged in for the entire shave. The cord for the charger is long enough that I can easily do this, with just one other minor inconvenience. So since I'm too stingy and lazy to find a new razor, I guess I'll keep doing it. 2018 - The trimmer got to a point where it won't work for more than a minute even when connected to a charger. ! Also if I change the protection length and turn it on too quickly, it will die immediately. What was just a minor inconvenience turned into a major pain. I start skipping spots when trimming because I have to stop mid-trim to let it reload. 2019 - I maximized the life of this trimmer and it no longer works. I think it's time to buy a new one. TL; DR: This is a great trimmer for the price, but by no means should you buy it for life. Expect to only use it for about 2 years, maybe 3 max if you're patient like me before replacing it. If they sold replacement batteries for it I'd give it an instant 5/5. But due to the short lifespan I have to downgrade the rating.
