Entry-level

The dedicated consumer camera has given way to the ubiquitous high-quality smartphone video. Sometimes you want a real thing, but with a video camera already in your pocket, you don't want to spend an arm and a leg. This camera *might* give you more videographic space than your smartphone, but there's no escaping it, it's a cheap entry-level device. zoom) and HDMI output during movie recording. The function menu overlays the viewfinder LCD and you can navigate it by touching it. There's also a navigation wheel on the side of the camera, which I find very unintuitive and overkill with a touchscreen, so no problem. The video image itself is not that impressive. The spirit is the same. There is a "stop" mark on the zoom scale from W to T, which stops and then resumes the continuous increase. I always think it's a feature and the breakpoint can be moved and/or disabled, but I couldn't find a word about it in the sparse but fairly basic manual that accompanies it. Note that it supports resolutions up to 4K, so you can include a lot of data in the video, but zooming, panning, etc. seems to produce artifacts. For the app I'm planning it will work well I think - like a third camera in a multi-camera Zoom presentation. The other two are Sony handhelds and I'll rely on them first; This is probably used to win over the audience. One thing I'm looking forward to is a remote control that allows me to control the zoom from my console. The zoom range is generally quite limited, and focusing on the body at close range is not very good. It also has a microphone input. All the functionality of this entry-level camera is pretty well thought out. If you're serious about video, I'd go for something with optical zoom and a better sensor/processing. For an "extra video device" alongside your camera, this would be fine if you want to keep costs to a minimum, especially if most of your random videos will pass through the camera anyway. I'm only giving it three stars because the video just isn't quite there, but if I could I'd give it three and a half.
