I'm not a fan of photography with any degree of regularity. Let's start with that. In the past, I've relied on headlamps and cell phones to capture the moment, so this giant leap into the world of DSLRs was, to say the least, a swim in uncharted waters. If you're looking for all that technical jargon and in-depth analysis of various features, I'm not here baby. I appreciate the efforts of knowledgeable people and their comments/reviews which really convinced me that this D5000 is the best value for money camera and so far that feeling hasn't been compromised. Received the camera and had a quick look at the Nikon School DVD that came with it which helped me understand the capabilities of the camera as well as the basics of how it works. The menu system is fairly simple and anyone with a basic computer knowledge should have no problem navigating through the different modes, although all the choices and options seemed a little intimidating to me at first, so I left the main selection on automatic and took a few shots to turn it on to get a feel for the D5000. The first thing that struck me was the speed and accuracy of the actions without having to worry about vibrations or blurry images. Capturing clear photos of fast-moving subjects was another new experience that made me love the device. Through trial and error, mostly the latter, I also learned the basics of zooming, focusing, and using different modes for action sports, twilight, and a few other modes. So for the uninterested photographer, the D5000 gave me joy and actually got me looking for more photo ops, which was the primary goal in purchasing this advanced (for me) camera. I'm still trying to figure out the burst mode, where you have to take 3-4 shots in a row, but this option is hidden somewhere in the various menu items that I'll find out after reading the instructions. . A few words on actually choosing a camera over the competition: I chose Nikon because of the name's familiarity, its reputation for technical excellence and because of the various reviews I read before purchasing. Maybe other manufacturers have the same, less or better quality in this regard, but the Nikon name was worth the purchase price in my opinion. For me it was like buying a Toyota instead of a Kia, you know what I mean? In any case, first time DSLR buyers will be happy to know I took the plunge with the Nikon D-5000 and I'm glad I did it with no regrets and I recommend the D5000.
