Review on Saicoo LED Desktop Lamp: Large LED Panel, Seamless Dimming-Control, USB Charging Port & More! by Kristi Davis

Decent bargain lamps, but touch sensors unreliable at best

OVERVIEW I bought two of these lamps to use for table lighting in video conferencing. If you're looking for LED panels that can serve as a table lamp or video light, they should fill the bill as long as you get a good one. The lamp's versatility, dimming, and tone adjustment are great video conferencing lighting features that are hard to find at this price point. However, there are a couple of major issues with my units that I think others should be aware of. According to the price list, these lamps do not have my recommendation. Note. For those having key sensitivity issues, check out the bottom of my review and try these tips. They can help you if the lamp decides it doesn't want to cooperate. ADVANTAGES The lamps are bright and have good manoeuvrability. The elbow joints are strong (but I'm not talking about durability yet). Adding a USB port is also useful on a desk. The light controls are bright and easy to read. The lamps also have a good range of brightness settings, and adjusting the warm/cool tone can make the light less harsh in certain conditions. The bulbs also remember their previous settings when switched off, so you basically just have to toggle them on and off unless you need to adjust their brightness/hue frequently. NEGATIVE Quality control issues and less than ideal touch sensor reliability are my biggest issues with these lamps. In particular, I see two major problems with my devices. Problem 1: Quality control may be missing. One of my devices is wobbly (deformed plastic at the base). This problem can be solved by adding special rubber feet to the device, but this is unacceptable for a buyer in this price range. That particular lamp probably should have been captured by QC. A mistake is no reason to lower the quality of a product line as a whole. It's possible that this is a one-off situation that can be easily remedied with replacement. But the second problem affects both of my lamps and others have complained about it. Problem 2: Intermittent touch sensors. Second, and perhaps most annoying, both devices I received have intermittent touch sensors. The sensor (especially the increase in brightness) often does not react, no matter how often you touch it. It may take a few seconds for random button presses to cause the lamp to follow your commands. I'm wondering if there is an electrical grounding issue in the design of the lamp. I can only speculate about the reason. Whatever is causing this behavior, I don't think it befits lamps with such a high price tag. Problem 3: The packaging does not protect the lamps from scratches. Both of my devices arrived with horizontal scratches on their plastic mounts. Lamps usually have plastic sleeves around the temples to prevent this during shipping, but these lamps come in bags. Unfortunately, bags do not prevent elbows from rubbing against each other during transport, which can lead to scratches. The manufacturer should improve the packaging to protect the lamps during transportation. Even the cheap table lamps in the big stores are packed more securely than they are. I will also point out that packaging is not an issue for Revain. The problem is how the lamps are packaged in the manufacturer's packaging. TIPS FOR BROKEN SENSORS For those who have purchased these devices and are finding that their touch sensors are unreliable, try the following to get the lamp to respond (I cannot guarantee this will work). If you received a defective product, it's better to just return it, after all, you pay for the best.) If you press the brightness down button and the lamp doesn't respond, try pressing the brightness up button , and then press the Dimmer button again. If the brightness button doesn't work, press the dimmer button first. If none of the options work, try touching the heat or cool buttons (hold your finger on the panel) and then slide your finger across the sensors to the button you want to interact with. One of these methods is to make the desired button respond. If not, you probably need to unplug the lamp. These workarounds can make the lamp usable, but again I find this behavior unacceptable for the asking price. Overall, I'll keep the bulbs I ordered as I rarely need to do anything other than turn them on and off and they work well for video conferencing. However, I'm dismayed that I've paid so much for lamps that misunderstand something as fundamental as user interface reliability. If the touch sensors worked reliably, that would be 5 stars in my book.
