I used two other bread slicers with the wood you need to assemble. Pieces fell off of both the first time I used them and they are much larger and more expensive than this food slicer. This small, easy-to-use slicer comes right out of the box without the size of the slice adjuster. You have three width options. You use your own knife to cut the gap. After cutting a slice, move the bread to the next slice. This works really well if your bread is a bit wide to fit in. Mine was even bigger so I could still stuff the bread in. I love that this slicer takes up a lot less space than other slicers and that it has a crumb tray which helps a little to keep crumbs from spilling all over the place. A long time ago or not, I don't know. It's all plastic and not the most durable.
