If you like headphones you should have a pair of these

I just bought another set of these vemonk+ after not having a working pair for about a year and I was satisfied enough to write a review even after I have owned several sets of these for years. I compared them to my other latest headphones, the Sennheiser HD560s. I also just bought an E30 DAC and a L30 headphone amp, couldn't resist buying them now that all the flaws have been ironed out and for the crazy peak power that has been squeezed out of them. They're a great base for testing headphones, especially the hd560s and Monks. I was expecting the hd560s to be full size open back headphones that have amazing performance for a $199 headphone, they sound better than a lot of headphones I've had at various price points. The HD560s sounds like it has a bit more detail, but when compared directly to the Monks it also sounds like it's almost forcing detail through its frequency response. The Monks are actually very detailed but don't boost the highs as much, instead having more body in the mids and a bit more mids in the bass versus the flat but very deep bass of the hd560. I'm also surprised I'm not missing much of the hd560's soundstage size and picture capabilities as I thought I was sure the Monks would tend towards that reduced size like you get with IEMs, but they do Not. I won't lose like I expected. I should also mention that I've used them with the foam sleeves that came with them and played them with a parametric EQ and they respond well to the EQ. I pulled it out a bit at 2k, added a bit of 10-20k and played around with the bass a bit, I didn't V shape them, I just removed a fairly large spike at 2k and rolled back up to 10k . I like both sounds, with and without EQ, and switch between them often. Overall I'm just really happy with my return visit to the monks, after all these years and for $10 you still get amazing sounding headphones.

Pros
  • . Detailed and enriched sound
Cons
  • Negative impression

Not worth the audiophile fuss (without a headphone amplifier)
