I've written a few comments about portable evaporative coolers because most of them are junk. They can work mechanically but are too small to be effective. This is an exception. It is not manufactured exclusively by or for Honeywell. It's been around for a long time. I bought my first cooler from Home Depot about 15 years ago and it was branded as Mastercool, who were the first to make a single entry cooler with a celdek seal. Since then I have seen at least four other stamps on it. This version is almost identical except that it added a mode and sleep button and a more visible water level indicator. As with the original, the remote control is almost useless unless you're close enough to see the LEDs on the top of the unit, and when you can you can just reach out and use the buttons manually. Because its effectiveness is directly related to your relative. Humidity, it doesn't work in most parts of the country, and you can't cool even a small room unless it's covered by an open window, as it constantly needs fresh, dry air. They are good if you know when, where and how to use them. None of the people who gave this cooler bad reviews did. I've just read a bunch of reviews and a few complaints about leaks. It CANNOT leak unless overcrowded. The sight glass should see the float, not the water level. If you see water in the sight glass, you've probably put about a gallon TOO much water in it, and water will be leaking out the bottom seam, which is actually the TOP of the tank. If you turn it on at this point, it will spit water through the blinds. Also through the media. This is not a filter. This is a special product that absorbs water easily and the honeycomb pattern ensures good air circulation. Cooling occurs through the evaporation of water from the pillow. The more the better, but any solids in the water will stay and settle on the pad, eventually turning it into a brick. I only use soft water in mine and at the end of the season I do an acid soak with Limeaway or CLR before putting it away. A crusty pad will not work. You must either clean it or replace it. I've been using evaporative coolers for almost 70 years and relied on them exclusively until about 20 years ago, so I've learned pretty much everything there is to know about them.
