Not for me. - Pro Video Accessories

I really wish this cage was a good solution to add a top handle and USB power bank. Unfortunately, this is not a very good solution for this. First, if you watch the product video, SmallRig actually makes a handle for it. IMHO that's too small. I installed a small NATO rail and a more realistic grip. Also seen in one of the photos is a power bank attached to the bottom of the cage. I tried this and found the top handle and power supply combination problematic. The problem lies in the design of the cell. The cage's only attachment point is around the lens. If you have a top handle and power pack combination, this creates a grip at the attachment point. I noticed that the camera moved about 2-3mm when I gripped it with the AC adapter connected. The movement was created by flexing the mounting ring on the separator. Granted, the problem with my setup was probably compounded by the fact that the grip I was using was longer than the SmallRig in the video and created more leverage. That said, I don't think this cage can support the weight of most bottom-mounted batteries, at least not without adding stress to the lens. This is a beautiful cage. The wooden grip looks great and is definitely better than the bare camera. I ended up installing my ZV1 (including this cage) in a Camvate universal cage and it worked much better to support more accessories. I've added some photos to my review to show how I wrapped this cage with Camvate cage to allow the rig to handle more weight. It now has 2 contact points to support the camera. More importantly, the lens mount doesn't support the weight of any accessories I might mount underneath. I attached an Arca Swiss adapter to the bottom of the SmallRig cage. Camvate locks the viewfinder in front mode, I don't really care. The SmallRig cage camera can be mounted/removed from the rig in about 20 seconds. I'm still not a fan of the SmallRig cage lens based mount, but I like this workaround. Camvate cage was another $58 at Revain, NiceyRig grip about $32 (which is great!), Swiss plate/clamp Fotasy Arca is $12. I already had a cold shoe adapter that provides a second point of contact between the camera and the outer cage, but I think they cost around $14. So everyone is talking about $100-$120 on top of a SmallRig cage, but for now this is an amazing rig.

Pros
  • ERGONOMIC WOODEN HANDLE
Cons
  • Don't really like it, everything is fine
