Works great but installation is tricky

When I was looking for a new printer, I often read in reviews of other printers that the printer takes a long time to start printing. I chose this printer because it has a spec for this feature called "First Print" listed as 10 seconds. In practice even faster. My first impression of this printer is very good. I had trouble installing the printer and software. I couldn't install it from the CD that came with it. It may have been complicated because I set it up as a wired network printer. But I should have made it. The instructions state that if you have problems with a network installation, you should first try installing it as a USB printer. I haven't tried this, so I don't know if it works. Instead I downloaded the driver from Canon's website. The driver installed but then reported that it could not detect the printer. I had to use the Windows feature "add a printer". Then it finally gets installed. I will update this review once I have some experience with it. UPDATE: After two weeks of using the printer I am very happy with it. It's easy to use. Start typing fast. Print documents and photos in excellent quality. It runs flawlessly. After two weeks of use, the ink cartridges are still showing as full. I would recommend this printer to my friends and family. UPDATE #2: After four months of use, I'm still very happy with this printer. I haven't personally encountered any of the issues raised by other reviewers here. However, I have a comment. When I ran out of black ink, the software would show a constant low-ink screen every time I printed a document. Then I have to close this window. I've printed at least 100 pages since this annoying screen appeared and it continues to print normally without a new ink cartridge. It's more than a little annoying. I suspect that this problem is not specific to this printer, but to all Canon printers with software installed. There must be a way to disable this behavior. TO UPDATE. A NOTICE. I've since found out that you can actually turn off the grunt screen by unchecking the "Option" box in the printer status window.

Pros
  • With great features like AirPrint2, Mopria Print Service6, Smartphone Copy3, Auto Power On/Off, Ethernet and Wi-Fi5 connectivity it's easy to see why PIXMA printers are so easy to use are.
