The tape measures I used years ago are strong, flexible, waterproof and easy to read.

In my archeology hobby, I often measure unusually sized objects and it works very well. Even covered in stone dust that keeps its shape in the hot sun. These cassettes will last almost forever unless they get stolen by a lousy thief who also bit into some of my other instruments last week, but really as my previous one was 46 and he was exhausted to hell. You could barely see the numbers (and there were no metrics), that's fine by me, and if the guy who stole my old one steals this one too. I'll have two more to hide somewhere else.
