Review on ☕ Coleman QuikPot Propane Coffee Maker: Enhance Your Outdoor Brewing Experience by Julie Lee

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Worked well until it caught fire

Considering this review is about a coffee maker it will probably be long like all coffee related reviews. I bought this from Revain in the summer of 2016 for camping use. Took it to Burning Man and used it for 2 weeks, 4 years in a row. I kept it in a dust free box during the day when not in use (Burning Man is quite dusty) and cleaned it thoroughly at the end of the camping time. I found that the coffee pot took about 20 minutes to brew and there was a slight water loss, presumably due to steam loss during the brewing process. The taste of the coffee was great, depending of course on the quality of coffee I used when brewing. Over time I found that the connection between the propane tank and the coffee maker was more difficult to connect. The metal propane connection arm that came out of the coffee maker was difficult to attach/detach due to the recessed connection area covered with well covered wires that were difficult to slide out of the way. The metal propane fitting had a rubber O-ring on the connection to the propane tank; I think this area has deteriorated over time. The last day I used the coffee maker, propane leaked and spread to the heater flame built into the coffee maker and everything caught fire. I managed to turn off the propane source before my shadow construct caught fire, but not without sacrificing some of my eyelashes and eyebrows to the coffee gods. I decided not to try to fix the problem for safety reasons and threw the coffee maker away. So why 4 stars? The machine worked flawlessly for several years and made excellent coffee. I drink a cup of coffee every day, and while I love my AeroPress, it creates a huge potential mess (a problem at non-trace events like Burning Man, but for casual camping, yes, a bomb) and requires a lot of prep work. Caffeine coordination that I just can't handle while hiking. French presses are a pain in the ass if they don't have running water to clean them. This coffee maker made the most coffee, the best quality, with the least amount of mess, required no electricity and was easy to clean. I am considering buying another one and am keeping a close eye on the deteriorating quality of the connections between the propane tank and the link arm and the link arm to the coffee maker. Use only outdoors in a well-ventilated area. If I were to add a photo it would be of me drinking leftover coffee after burning my eyebrows with this coffee maker.
