Tried the foil by hand but mixed it up to say the least. When I discovered that Brother had released their ScanNCut Foil Kit in the US, I received it, played around with it a bit and thought the results were good. What I didn't like was the cost of refills and the lack of variety. So. I bought this set and another set of Deco Sheets thinking I would use them with the ScanNCut Sheet Set. I have two ScanNCut machines (the original ScanNCut and the new ScanNCut DX) so I was also interested in seeing if I could get it to work on both machines. Brother insists that other brands of transparencies should NOT be used with the ScanNCut. ; I thought it sounded a bit crazy considering that everything should be fine if I follow all of their instructions. So I went to see it. Basically, here's how you do it: (1) Place your cardboard on a low-tack mat. Using a glue stick in the slide kit's pen holder (there are settings to adjust; I won't go into detail here), draw a pattern using the "glue" step of the slide function (in the original ScanNCut) or slide step 1 (in ScanNCut DX). (By the way, Sakura Quickie Glue Pens work great - just keep your Brother pen so you can compare the glue level of the Sakura pen to the 1-2-3-4 marks on the Brother pen.) (2) Remove the mat. machine, but do not move or remove the design on the machine. Let the glue dry. Once she stops looking wet, that's enough. (3) Place the film on the surface to be bonded with the colored side facing up and press lightly so that it is covered by the surface to be bonded. (Applying the film color side down will tear the adhesive off your box. Ask me how I know that.) (4) Cover the film with a plastic "protective film" - a film with Plastic screen printing is fine. Fasten it to keep it in place. Put the mat back in the car. (5) Remove the glue stick from the pen holder and insert the convex plastic insert (I forgot what they call it - that's what the foil does for you) into the bottom of the pen holder. Put the pen holder back into the machine. (6) Now start the machine with either the foil step of the foil function (Original ScanNCut) or foil step 2 (ScanNCut DX). I should note here that I have had excellent results with the ScanNCut DX using the default foil settings. In the original ScanNCut, the default settings weren't very good; When I set the foil pressure to 2, the result looked just as good as the DX. You may have to do a little fiddling to find the right setting. (7) Gently peel off the protective plastic film, and then gently peel back the film. *** My results were just as good with this product as with the products in the original kit. . You don't have to spend at least 4x to get something nice.
