Works right out of the box. I've tried it with different barcodes and it works perfectly - even with some hard-to-read codes. The barcode scanner works like a keyboard and passes the number to the open app. The cable is long enough to work with most applications connected to a PC or laptop. The barcode scanner fits comfortably in your hand. The base cable is well protected. The scanner has a softer plastic surrounding the hard case, which means it won't scratch the surface it's placed on. It may be one of the cheapest barcode scanners out there, but it seems to offer many of the product's features at a multiple of its cost. When the barcode is read, the device emits a soft beep that is audible and not too annoying, and the beam turns off immediately.
